City of Light gala raises $80,000 for Hospice

Hospice Prince Edward says ‘merci bien’ to 190 attendees who helped raise more than $80,000 at the second annual Autumn Leaves Gala event held Saturday at the Wellington Community Centre.

Themed with the flair of Paris, the ‘City of Light’ evening celebrated the creation of the residential project at 40 Downes Ave., in Picton, and the continuation of its support.

“It was an evening for celebration of the residential hospice and it was also a thank you to everyone who has contributed and continues to contribute to this project,” said Nancy Parks, Hospice Executive Director. “We are close to realizing our goal for the community campaign of $875,000.”

Sans Souci executive chef Greg Sheridan wished guests a bon appetit with choices including Squab Brigard ~ Orange and ginger wild rice stuffed game hen; Beef Bourguignon; County Lamb Persille ~ roasted rack of lamb with a blend of garlic, breadcrumbs, parsley, butter and freshly ground pepper rub or  a Vegan Mille Feuille ~ Pastry layers of roast chick peas and vegetables in philo with balsamic reduction.
Dessert was a savory poached pear bathed in a red wine reduction and served with mousse chocolate with delicate dark chocolate drizzle.

Accordion player Neal Pupulin, from Woodbridge, serenaded guests at their impeccably decorated tables and for a kiss, he “allowed” a photograph to be taken.

Silent and live auctions featured goods and services valued at more than $40,000. Auctioneer Manson Slik and wife Lori Slik set the course for  entertaining fundraising.

“Our community has, and continues to be amazing,” Parks said. “This past year was a momentous one for our community with the opening of our residential hospice. None of it would have been possible if it wasn’t for our board of directors, the hospice staff… and all our volunteers.

“By coming together tonight, we are all celebrating Hospice Prince Edward and supporting the journey of living with dying, for our friends and neighbours and their families, to ensure that the best of end of life care is available. Thank you –  although a simple thank you doesn’t seem to be enough.”

The event was a swan song for gala committee member Wayne Carruthers, Hospice Prince Edward’s Resource Development Coordinator. He has accepted a position with similar duties at Hospice Quinte, in Belleville.

While at Hospice Prince Edward, Carruthers was well known in the community for his work with fundraising activities such as the gala, the Hike for Hospice and the annual Coffee Party.
