Residents of H.J. McFarland Memorial Home and members of the Canada 150 and Prince Edward County 225 Celebration Ad Hoc Committee planted a commemorative tree on the grounds of the home.
In celebration of Canada’s 150th and Prince Edward County’s 225th anniversaries this, a commemorative tree will be planted in each ward of the County this fall.
Mayor Robert Quaiff planted the first tree, a sugar maple, this week in Benson Park. Trees will be planted in each of the other wards throughout the fall.
Each tree planted will be accompanied by a plaque commemorating the anniversaries.
“We’ve had such an amazing year filled with endless celebrations for both Canada’s 150th and The County’s 225th anniversaries,” said Quaiff. “It’s been a memorable year for many of us. “This commemorative tree planting initiative is the ideal legacy project to continue the celebration. I commend the volunteers on our Canada 150th and Prince Edward County 225 Celebration Ad Hoc Committee for carefully planning and executing this project.”
County residents, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to plant their own commemorative trees. For more information about purchasing a plaque to accompany your tree, contact the County of Prince Edward’s Customer Service Desk during regular office hours at: 613.476.2148 ext. 1023.
The ad hoc committee is made up of community volunteers tasked with overseeing the planning and implementation of a marketing and promotional campaign to encourage participation in Canada 150 and PEC 225 events across the County throughout 2017.

The picture of residents, family, staff and friends planting a tree in the front yard of McFarland Home is one I will cherish for along time to come. A few years ago we fought very hard and saved the beautiful front acreage of the home from being developed into what is now in behind the Home. To see a new tree being planted beside the amazing pines that already thrive there now, for the Residents to look out their windows and enjoy or go out and sit under their canopies, truly makes me know and believe that together we can make a difference and make McFarland Home, a true HOME for those who live there.
