Connections and coincidences get much-needed N95 masks to County’s hospital

Thanks to a series of coincidences, the County’s hospital in Picton received two large boxes of N95 and P100 masks free of charge from Calgary.

County connections across North America bring a story of generosity of much-need personal protective equipment for staff at the County’s hospital in Picton.

“This story of generosity and communication demonstrates how we are all connected – especially now, during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Cheryl Anderson.

Dr. Norma Charriere, Medical Director, Chief Rural Medicine, for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital and North Hastings Hospital in Bancroft was searching for a source of additional personal protective equipment for front line workers. The shortage of equipment is particularly acute in rural areas.

“While speaking to her step-daughter Rhonda, in Calgary, she mentioned that she was looking for a source of extra N95 masks for Picton hospital,” explains Anderson. “Rhonda was able to contact Carl, a former colleague in the personal protective equipment industry.

“Coincidentally, Carl had a stock of sample N95 and P100 masks in his garage . He had offered them to Calgary hospitals, but they were already well-supplied,” recounts Anderson. “Carl contacted Dr. Charriere and offered to ship the masks free-of-charge to Picton as his company, Dynamic-Safety PIP donated the masks and the shipping.”

And how did Anderson learn about all this?

“My brother, and sister-in-law Mary, live in Marlton, New Jersey. Mary sent me the photo of Dr. Charriere and the nurses from the Picton emergency department thanking Carl for the masks.

“As it turns out, Mary’s brother John is the vice-president of sales for Dynamic-Safety PIP in Calgary. John sent her the photo because he was so happy and proud that his company was able to help, and I was able to tell this story.”
