Construction at The Royal Hotel to resume

Construction at Picton’s Royal Hotel will resume following a setback in April when the eastern wall settled.

“Since that time we have been working around the clock with engineers, architects and our construction team to finalize plans for remediation,” said Sharon Laredo. “Full construction at the site is expected to resume shortly.”

A full review of the entire building was undertaken by The Royal’s structural engineers. In addition to the rebuilding of the eastern wall, work will continue to reinforce sections of the other elevations.

“This is, of course, a major setback for the project that will result in an overall delay of our launch,” said Sol Korngold, of The Royal. “We remain committed and more more excited than ever to see this project through to completion. We sincerely appreciate all the support and kind words received from all corners of the County.”

Owner Greg Sorbara said that “while we cannot yet pin-point the re-opening date for the hotel, our commitment to the project has not wavered in the slightest. Re-opening as quickly as possible remains our central focus.”

Over the past four months, planning for the adjacent property at 6 Ross St., has continued. This building, the former stables of the hotel, will house administrative offices, retail space and five additional suites.

When The Royal first opened its doors in 1879, it was the centre of social life in Picton and the larger community of Prince Edward County. The restoration of the heritage designated property is to reflect the storied 140-year long rich history.

Once operational The Royal will serve as a boutique hotel with 28 rooms, two restaurants, a small spa, patio gardena nd lounge with event capacity to serve up to 150 guests.

The Royal’s executive chef, Albert Ponzo, has a passion for working closely with nature and plans to draw inspiration from the County his Italian roots and County produce.
