Construction of new path through Mill Pond Park set to begin

The municipality will begin construction of a new path to the Bloomfield Mill Pond Park this week.

The pathway will create new pedestrian access from Mill Street, to Mill Pond Park at 17 Brick St., in Bloomfield. The tennis courts will remain open during the work, but use of the playground and park area will be limited during this time.

The path is an outcome of the community consultation completed as part of the Mill Pond Park Main Street Connection project, funded through the municipal Parkland Reserve Project for Bloomfield / Hallowell.

Last year, the municipality sought input from residents on how to spend funds allocated to parks and open green spaces. New provincial legislation states municipalities must now spend 60 per cent of their parkland funds within a year of acquiring them. The funds in reserve come from developers who provide cash instead of dedicating parkland in their projects. Municipalities ate required to spend finds in the same geographic area as the development occurred. In May, council was told $58,500 had been set aside for construction of the pathways.

Construction is scheduled to take place between Wednesday, Sept. 3 and Tuesday, Sept. 20 with work being completed by Terra Vista Landscaping.

Further projects are being considered within the park as future fundraising and budgets allow.
