Council supports community programs on day one of budget

Council has approved support for several community programs on day one of 2021 budget week.

Monday night, council approved $13,450 in cash and $11,840 in-kind use of muncipal facilities for The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association’s Active Living Centre programs. The Seniors Centre program funds are pre-approved for 2022 at the same level.

It decided not to waive outstanding carrying costs and property taxes for the LoveSong seniors housing project at the former Pinecrest elementary school, but will bill water carrying costs at the smallest domestic pipe rate. Going forward, staff will be directed to bill the 27 Corey St., Bloomfield property at the domestic pipe rate size for water, provided staff and LoveSong enter into an agreement that outlines payment schedule and program duration.

Council approved maintaining the current $30,000 budgeted for physician recruitment and include an additional $17,000 from reserves for a total of $47,000 to be available in 2021.

Council will refer issues with new family physican recruitment and general health care services (such as optometrists, nurses, psw positions) to the Health Care Advisory Working Group for advice, review and recommendations.

Pending potential council allocation of $20,000 from the 2020 budget ear-marked for food insecurity, council carry over the unspent 2020 budget to 2021 budget and tasks the Community and Economic Development Commission’s Food Security Working Group, and council, to make recommendations on how the 2021 funds could be distributed.

Discussion will follow in the coming budget days to discuss further funding of food insecurity and affordable housing in the County.

Presentations continue over four days. As well as Monday night’s overview of the 2021 budget, Carter will make presentations during the day sessions Dec. 8-10, to take council through the budget in greater detail.

The deliberations are being held at Highline Hall at the Wellington and District Community Centre with no public attendance allowed due to COVID-19 protocols. The meetings will stream live on the County’s YouTube channel and live updates will be tweeted @Shire_Hall and using #pecbudget.
