Council to review $184,054 in recommended community grants

Council will review a list of municipal cash and in-kind grants recommended and administered by The County Foundation (TCF) at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Requests for funds at $426,978 were significantly higher than the available budget of $243,169. Three of 43 applications were deemed ineligible, 12 requests were reduced and five were not funded.

“After careful review by the adjudication committee it was recommended $246,419 in grants be awarded to 36 applicants,” noted Ashley Stewart, Community Services and Programs Co-ordinator, in her report to council. “TCF contributes 25 per cent of the cash granting for grants under $5,000, representing the difference in the budgeted amount and the recommended amount.”

In an agreement with the municipality, TCF approves grants under $5,000, but recommends grants of more than $5,000, and seeks council approval before the municipality issues cheques.

This year, 17 grants of more than $5,000 representing $184,054 in cash and $26,700 in-kind (such as municipal hall rental charges being waived).

As part of its annual review process, TCF recommends a review of some process aspects for 2023 granting. Suggestions include allocating percentages for sector groups or priorities to deal with “increased fragmentation” where multiple organizations for applying for projects within the same sector group i.e. food security and arts/culture.

As demand exceeds supply, TCF also notes council may consider increasing the amount of funding for 2023, along with a review of scoring criteria to better assess the range of applications received.
