County Council has approved the purchase of a property in Wellington to facilitate the Lane Creek Diversion Project.

“We are pleased to be moving ahead with the modified plan to divert Lane Creek, which will allow us to complete the project in a manner that will be minimally disruptive to local businesses and traffic,” says Mayor Robert Quaiff. “The purchase of this property should result in project savings, while providing the opportunity to create a public space that will enhance the downtown core of Wellington.”

In a press release, the County states the purchase of 282/284 Wellington Main St., which stands atop Lane Creek, will allow the project to proceed at a reduced cost and risk, with the added benefit of minimizing disruption to residents and businesses.

The purchase is anticipated to reduce the cost of the project by $200,000 (from $1,605,000 to $1,403,000), including all costs associated with purchase of the property. Allocations for this project have been made in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 capital budgets. The purchase of this property will be funded from this capital budget
allocation.

The purchase of this property was originally identified as an option for the project, however other options were determined to be more cost effective. Since, through detailed design and site testing, the cost of the project has risen such that purchasing this key property has become an appropriate alternative.

Removing the building on the purchased property will allow for the creek to essentially remain in its current location, which will reduce the required road work on Wharf Street and minimize disruption of traffic at Wellington’s busiest intersection.

The County will be holding a public information centre in the near future to provide the public with overview of the updated project plan.

The acquisition of this property also provides an opportunity to establish a downtown parkette or similar type of public space on the site. Council will be considering this potential at a future date, with an aim to enhance the Wellington downtown streetscape.
