County hospital foundation ‘pumped’ about Poppy Fund donation

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 Poppy Fund Committee in Picton presented the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation with $3,000 toward purchasing infusion pumps.

The funds were from the 2018 poppy fund campaign which raised about $19,000 from more than 80 poppy boxes located in and around Picton.

The County’s hospital is in need of nine large volume infusion pumps – a medical device that delivers fluids such as nutrients and medications, into a patient’s body in controlled amounts. Infusion pumps are widespread in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes and in the home. Each of these pumps costs $6,746.

“The foundation was ecstatic when members of Branch 78’s poppy fund came forward with this donation to help offset the cost of one infusion pump,” said Monica Alyea, chairperson. “It’s vital for our community to continue to ensure our County Hospital is equipped with the latest technology to keep it relevant. We hope the community will see this as another sign that we are committed to building a vibrant future for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.”

This year the PECMH Foundation is committed to raising $255,000 for medical equipment needed at the hospital now.

“We are proud to say our community has come together to raise $191,000 toward this goal. With the Legion’s gift today, we have just over $64,000 to collect before March 31, 2019. We are relying on members of our community to continue to step up and help put our equipment fund campaign over the top.”

Community support is necessary because the government does not fund medical equipment. It is the responsibility of PECM Hospital Foundation, through the generosity of donors, organizations and community partners to meet its obligation to purchase vital medical equipment.

“This helps to ensure our caregivers can continue to deliver great care, close to home,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “We are also proud to announce with today’s gift, Branch 78’s cumulative giving total to our hospital over the past 12 years has surpassed $20,000!”

Each November, as Couny residents respectfully wear poppies in tribute to those who have fought and died for our country, many of us may not fully realize the direct impact these four-petaled flowers have on our community, said Coull.

While the primary purpose of the Poppy Fund is to provide assistance to former servicemen and women in need, a large portion of the funds raised in the County help support charitable organizations in the community that provide service and care to veterans.

Thanks to strong partnerships with the various levels of Legion governance, the PECMH Foundation has been the beneficiary of such funding. In the last 15 years, the foundation has been the recipient of more than $85,000 in donations from local Legion branches, Ladies Auxiliaries and the Provincial Command Charitable Foundation. These donated funds come largely through poppy fund sales.

“Over the years, our four local Legion branches, Picton, Wellington, Consecon and Deseronto have contributed to excellent care at PECMH. We are pleased to know their contributions and those of Provincial Command are not only helping ensure the best care for veterans, but for every one in Prince Edward County.”
