County man delivering on the family tradition

Jeremy Sills is carrying on the family tradition of delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors.

His parents, Herbert and Fallie Sills were featured in the Ottawa Citizen as long-time volunteers for the program in that community.

Jeremy proudly carries a Meals on Wheels basket similar to the one his parents used over 20 years ago. He said he hopes one day to pass along to his grandson this family tradition of volunteering.

Delivery of hot meals to seniors who live in Wellington and Wellington on the Lake, Picton, Cherry Valley, Ameliasburgh and the wards of Hillier, Hallowell, Bloomfield and Athol is available two to five days a week depending on location.

Community Care for Seniors also offers a wide selection of frozen meals that are low in sodium, nutritious and delicious. Seniors can order as many entrees, desserts and soups as they wish, as often as they wish. The cost is reasonable and delivery is included. Pick up can be arranged if that works better.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association supports seniors to live at home.

Services include delivery of hot and frozen meals, transportation to medical appointments and shopping, noon-time dinners for seniors in central locations, help with income tax, reassurance programs, caregiver support and respite, homemaking, yard work and home maintenance.

The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the South East Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts.

Community Care also recently announced the launch of the County Seniors Centre which offers programming in municipal halls throughout the County. Memberships are $25 and are available now.

Community Care also operates a Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street in Picton where volunteers accept donations of household items and clothing for the whole family. Store hours are Mondays 1-4pm and Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 4pm. Donations are welcome during these times. Call the Thrift Shop at 613-476-1555 for more information.
