County resident tells her Home Town Story on national television campaign

A video screen capture of the Busscher family with Charlene Inch at Picton Home Hardware.

When you see her smiling face on national television, give a big cheer to Charlene Inch and the team at Picton Home Hardware.
Charlene’s story is among those featured in Home Hardware’s Home Town Stories national television campaign – a myriad of true and touching stories that show how Home Hardware dealers, staff and partners get involved and support people in their communities.
Charlene’s one-minute segment tells of the support received from Picton Home Hardware’s Adam and Chrissy Busscher.
“I was just recovering from two cancers, chemotherapy and radiation,” Charlene said. “My small business took a hard hit after I was off for a year with treatments and numerous doctor appointments. I have known Adam and Chrissy Busscher for many years. They would call and check on me, and I mentioned that I was closing my business, and would be looking for another job. They invited me out for supper and offered me a job at their store.
“It was such a difficult time in my life. How was I going to find a job that would allow me time off for doctor appointments? Adam and Chrissy understood that and told me that I could work as much, or as little as needed. They  would do that for anyone. That is what makes them, and this home town, so special. I could never thank them enough.”
Over the past 45 years Home Hardware has expanded to more than 1,000 stores across Canada, each striving to always stay true to its guiding ethic – that community and common good is simply good business.

the Bloomfield Bicycle Company has nothing but the same stories to tell about Home Hardware and the fine folks that populate its aisles. So many times they’ve helped us out, supported our various charitable causes and calmly, cheerfully sorted out difficulties.

But I wonder if this story doesn’t say something else about “the County”. Good staff if hard to find. Really hard. And Adam knows that too. He didn’t snap Charlene up just because she was having a hard time, or because she needed was losing her job, but because he, as a small town business owner, is always on the lookout for responsible, dependable, honest, hard-working folks. The fact that she needed time off for medical reasons and that she was in a bind were challenges, for sure. But I am also sure that in Adam’s experience these could all be handled. And no matter how tough it might be, it would be well worth it to add another quality individual like Charlene to his staff. Because good staff is hard to find. Really hard.
