Plans for a new youth centre were unveiled during the Recreation Outreach Centre’s third annual showcase of talented County youth. The Roc ‘n Revue at The Regent Theatre featured youth performing with community coaches including: Miss Emily, The Reasonettes, Jamie Stever, Janet Kellough, Peter Rea, Kim Inch, Sarah Williams, Chris Bonham-Carter, Brenda Cunningham, Rick Zimmerman, Sharalee Foster and John McFarlane.

Players, coaches and volunteers with the County Clippers rep basketball program were honoured at an awards banquet this week in Wellington. The rep program offers opportunities over the house league play, with a focus on skill and team development.

Mayor Robert Quaiff brought Prince Edward County matters to Parliament Hill during the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus annual Breakfast with MPs. Quaiff contributed to talks with several MPs in attendance, including Bay of Quinte’s Neil Ellis, and a later meeting with Navdeep Baines, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.

Joined by their furry friends, members of the Prince Edward County 4H Pet Club shared what they’ve learned at an achievement program show. The 15-member group posted project information displays and spoke with visitors about their pets and their care.

Gay Lea Foods purchased Prince Edward County’s Black River Cheese Company effective June 1. Gay Lea Foods produces a wide variety of cheeses for retail and foodservice under current cheese brands, Salerno and Ivanhoe.

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation, through the community’s generous support, set a fundraising record in 2015/16, bringing in more than $820,000 for new medical equipment. The achievement brings the total raised for PECM Hospital to $7 million since 1998.

PECI Panther Baseball struck gold in Bay of Quinte, won in COSSA and advanced to OFSAA play this year. The 2016 lineup includes Gavin Ronan, Dan Seguin, Dryden Norton, Ryan Kelly, Kevin Wilson, Max Manlow, Ryan Rosborough, Matt Dobson, Rusty Strachan, Johnny McHugh and Iain Cameron.

Panther Pride was turned up to maximum Tuesday as Prince Edward Collegiate Institute filmed its second “Lip Dub”. A lip dub combines lip synching and audio dubbing to make a music video. The exercise included the school’s students, staff, parents, alumni and community partners presenting the excitement and energy of students and programs.

Children from CML Snider School in Wellington brought sunny smiles and energy to a gloomy and cold fundraising walk in the rain. More than a dozen children from Susan Ross’ Grade 5/6 class and Lisa Kulcher-Heaney’s Grade 3 class were in high spirits in their support of the Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward

The an-ti-ci-pation ends Thursday night as the curtain rises for the opening of The Rocky Horror Show at the Regent Theatre. The humourous, raunchy tribute to science fiction and horror B movies tells the story of a couple getting caught in a storm and, seeking help, arrive at the home of a mad transvestite scientist preparing to unveil his perfect man “complete with blond hair and a tan”. – Sarah Kirby photo

County residents packaged gifts, books, drawings and letters of support destined for the children of Attawapiskat this week. Mary Sinclair, one of the organizers, thanks Jeanette Arsenault, who volunteered to drive the donations to a collection depot in Ottawa – with the message “To Attawapiskat, with love, from Prince Edward County.”

Thousands of anglers cast to catch top prizes in the 36th annual Kiwanis Walleye World Fishing Derby. The biggest walleye, at 12.89lbs, won Richard Durston a boat, motor, trailer and acessories valued at $30,000. David Chong’s pike, weighing in at 14.57lbs won him a boat, motor, trailer and accessories valued at $12,750. Here, Paul McTaggart and Kiwanian Tom Finora at the Picton Marina weigh-in station with the pike that weighed in at 10.09lbs Saturday morning. McTaggart was last year’s big pike winner.

Quinte Health Care (QHC) has the shortest wait times in the province for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs). Compared to the provincial average of 106 days between January and March 2016, patients who visited QHC Belleville General Hospital for an MRI experienced an average wait time of just 19 days.

In support of families and friends experiencing the darkest days of their lives, more than 200 people took a hike in the rain. Teams participating in the fifth annual Hike for Hospice have raised more than $150,000 to date for the community residential hospice home, bereavement support and palliative care programs all provided free of charge.
