The cutting of a piece of fire hose marked the official opening of Prince Edward County’s new Fire and Rescue Station 1 and Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services Facility Thursday night. The public streamed in to enjoy a barbecued dinner and tour the 17,319 square foot facility.

Sandra and George Emlaw, of South Bay, were inducted into the Quinte Agricultural Hall of Fame last weekend at Farmtown Park in Stirling. The induction honours people who have made an outstanding contribution to the agriculture and food industry.

Rides at Picton’s midway became silent Sunday with torrential rain.

A thunderstorm Sept 11 did include a tornado of the lowest possible level associated with wind up to 100km/h. An EF Zero (on scale of 0-5) waterspout came in offshore at West Lake and moved about 3.5kms. Damage was mostly related to trees but most is considered “straight line damage” and not from the tornado. This waterspout photographed off West Lake by R. Halsey.

More than 300 participants on 62 teams in the third annual Grapes of Wrath tested their mettle over five mud-filled kilometres of rugged terrain and obstacles to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, Prince Edward County Memorial and Trenton Memorial hospital foundations. Tallied up, $60,000 was raised for patients receiving cancer care.

Visitors to Glenwood Cemetery heard the stories of ‘The Men Who Marched Away’ at Veterans’ Day ceremonies on Saturday. The day began with a memorial service at the Veterans’ Plot featuring a parade with colour parties, a pipe and drum band, and guest soloist Jeanette Arsenault. Phil Norton photo

Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs had no funding to offer, but lent a sympathetic ear to challenges Prince Edward County farmers are facing because of drought conditions not seen here since the 1940s.
