“Bright”, creative volunteers with the “Department of Illumination” have been hosting community workshops this week in a bid to engage the community in the creation of a Firelight Lantern Festival on Saturday, April 20.

A series of 20 community lantern-making workshops are being held during the month prior to the festival. During this March Break week, they have been held at the County’s public libraries and have attracted plenty of children, parents and grandparents.

Co-organizers Susanne Larner and Krista Dalby, are working toward an April 20 festival beginning before dusk at Benson Park.

“As the sun sets, our paper lanterns will be lit and the crowd will parade them through the darkening streets of Picton, winding up in Delhi Park. We’ll gather to hear a choir singing, watch a shadow puppetry performance, and listen to live music. Afterwards there will be light installations to explore, and food and drink available for sale.”

The theme for the 2013 festival is water, so think fish, seabirds, boats, pirates, turtles, mermaids, whales, sea monsters or lighthouses while coming up with ideas for your lantern.

People who would like to get involved as a volunteer or sponsor, or would like to have a lantern-making workshop, contact Krista at krista@smallpondarts.ca or (613) 471-1322.

  2. The Department of Illumination needs makers who can come to Bloomfield Centre for Creativity on Easter weekend (March 29, 30, 31, any time between 10 and 5).

We’re making two giant puppets, and we’ll need help sewing, painting, doing minor woodworking, etc.

We will also have some other building/sewing/making projects that you can help with.

  3. Beth says:

Best way to get the information is the blog spot or on the Department of Illumination Facebook page.

  4. Nicole says:

    Hello,
    when is the next workshop?
Also, who do I speak to about the possibility of vending at this event?

    Cheers,
    Nicole

I agree with Beth; Doris you should come out to one of our workshops! But if you would prefer to mail a donation, cheques can be made to The Department of Illumination and sent to Small Pond Arts, 337 Clarke Rd, Picton, ON K0K 2T0. Thanks for your enthusiasm! It’s going to be a great festival.

  6. Beth says:

Do to any of the lantern making workshops Doris, they have a donation box. And while you are there, why don’t you make a lantern that you can carry or that can be donated for someone else to carry. There is a blog spot that has all the information http://firelightfest.blogspot.ca/.

  7. You can learn more about the Firelight Lantern Festival and see the schedule of lantern making workshops at its blog here:

Also, I’ve written a blog post about my creation of the event’s poster and logo here:

This sounds like a terrific idea–can’t wait to see it all happen
Let people know where they can send a donation
