Informal gathering planned for cyclist Jonny Fox

A cyclist involved in a motor vehicle collision Saturday in Bloomfiled has died.
Prince Edward County OPP officers report John Fox, 56, of Bloomfield was travelling on Main Street about 10:48 p.m. in the village of Bloomfield.

Police report an eastbound vehicle struck the cyclist who was reported to be in the centre of the roadway. Fox was transported to the Kingston General Hospital where he later died.

John ‘Jonny’ Fox is the son of Mary and the late Tom Fox. He is the brother of Elisha ‘Mary’ Fox of Belleville, Joyce and Graham Bell of Toronto, Tom and Linda of Bloomfield and Diana-Lynn Fox of Ottawa.

An informal gathering will take place in the hall of the Bloomfield United church on Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. Cremation has taken place.  If desired, donations to the Loyalist Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.

Condolences to the Fox family were quick to start pouring in for the man who was known to many in Bloomfield.
“Who’s going to wake me in the morning with those jaunty greetings to all and sundry as he passes along the street?” comments Celine Papizewska, owner of Diva Adornments, in downtown Bloomfield.
“Johnny always had a cheery greeting, a big smile and an even bigger heart,” said Lynne Wiseman Ross. “He will be sorely missed by all in Bloomfield, that’s for sure.”

She suggested anyone in Bloomfield who has a flagpole, could lower the flag to half-mast as “a suitable thing to do in remembrance of Johnny and in respect for his family.”

The investigation is continuing.

Thank you to the Church Ladies and the entire congregation of Bloomfield United Church for hosting Johnny’s Gathering last evening. Hundreds of people were given the opportunity to grieve with the Fox family.

  6. It is hard to imagine our village without this hardworking, friendly man drifting by on his bike or lawn mower. We waved to him last week as he walked along Main street. Somehow Bloomfield will never be quite the same. Our thoughts are with his family.

  7. Pam Patterson says:

Johnny was an institution in Bloomfield. How will I ever find anything anymore! Johnnie found my hat, my stamps, my neighbor’s dog…. when he dropped off the paper I’d be working chained at my computer and I’d hear the mudroom door open and hear the slap of the paper hitting the floor. “Hi Johnnie,” I’d yell, “Thank You!” … “Ok” he’d yell. “Have a nice day!”… He was (and still is) woven into the dailiness of the village for me – everyday on that red bike, on the street, cutting grass, at my door……I (the whole village!) was so shocked to hear of this accident & his death….Mary, Tom, Lindsay, Linda and the extended Fox family….I am so sorry for your loss….

  8. Susan West says:

I know Johnny would be stunned by the outpouring of affection and loss we all feel on his passing.. He cheered each and everyone of us in a hundred different ways everyday!!!! His kind heart and cheerful face will be sorely missed!

  10. sandi sokol says:

Johnny has always been knitted into the fabric of the Bloomfield I know. Delivering papers, cutting grass, doing an odd job here and there…. a smile, a wave, a happy word. I am extremely saddened to hear of this tragedy and
will miss him and the special flavour he brought to our village. My sincere condolences to Mary and her family. God bless.

  11. Annemarie Fulford says:

What will Bloomfield be without Johny? He always brought a smile to my face, and was so kind and always helpful. I will miss you my friend, and so will we all. My deepest condolences to Mary, Tom, and the rest of the Fox family.

  12. Margaret MacDonald says:

Johnny seemed to have a nickname for all the Bloomfield ladies–for me, my sisters and my mother it was either “darlin'” or “sweetheart”, though admittedly, he sometimes couldn’t tell us apart. I will miss his exuberant disposition, seeing him bike past the house or drive up Mill Street on his riding mower or find his wagon inexplicably parked on our lawn. But I will never forget how he started the day early with a song or a whistle as he dropped off papers and checked in on my Mom to make sure she was okay, the way he did for so many seniors living on their own in the the village. We were lucky to know him. My deepest sympathies to Mary, Lynn, Tom and the rest of the Fox clan.

  13. Pettit Family says:

As with everyone else here we have never known a Bloomfield without “Johnny the Fox”. It’s going to take a lot of getting used to, and the place is lessened without him. When you interact with a guy almost every day, even if it’s just a “hello”, you miss it…even if it seems trivial at the time. I feel we almost need a statue dedicated to him…he WAS Bloomfield. Condolences to the Fox family, our thoughts are with you.

  14. Tish and John Castle says:

Such a loss Bloomfield will never be the same, condolences to the Fox family.

I have known Johnny pretty much all my life and he was quite a guy. He was very helpful to so many people in our community and a real town clown bringing allot of laughs with his fun filled spirit. I for one will miss not seeing him riding by on his bike and bringing me our weekly papers. This was a very tragic event and has left our community reeling over his loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with John as he enters a new journey. May the lord keep him and give him peace. Thought and prayers go out to the Fox family as well as the driver who must be devastated. Fred & Donna Cole… Bloomfield.

Johnny was a daily visitor up our driveway and would always great me with a cheerful, “Hey pretty lady!” He hated the gargoyles in my garden, and grumbled that he didn’t see why I kept “those darn things.” He will truly be missed in our village. Sincere condolences to Mary, Tom and the rest of the Fox family.

  31. David Norman says:

Last week I ran into John outside of Mac’s after purchasing a lottery ticket… he wished me good luck and said he hoped I would become the next lucky “millionaire” winner. I thanked him for his kind wishes and said I’d give him a “cut” if I did win… he replied that my offer wasn’t necessary as his life was already quite rich… I can see from these comments that that was the case. R.I.P. John Fox

My condolences to the Fox family, from Jenny, Becky and Cathy [formerly Miller]. John was very good to us when we lived in Bloomfield, and always cheerful, and worked very hard. A good many people could live by his example of kindness, do-anything-for-you attitude, and friendship. There won’t be another like him to give Bloomfield that extra special brand of uniqueness. Rest in Peace, Friend.
