Decoration Day – A Day of Remembrance

Decoration-Day-2014-sThe weather was perfect at Glenwood Cemetery last Sunday afternoon for the special day of celebration of the lives of those who have gone before us.

Visitors were welcomed to the grounds by the beautiful music of Ken Hudson as he played his 12-string guitar and sang.

During the early 1900s, it was customary for families to come to Glenwood for a special day of remembrance. Flowers and wreaths were placed on the graves of loved ones, prayers were said, and many visitors took a quiet stroll around the park-like grounds.

Decoration Day was reintroduced to Glenwood three years ago and it is gaining the appreciation of many who have lost loved ones. The day provides an opportunity for people to pay their respect to family members and friends by visiting their graves and sharing memories. It is an occasion to recall and celebrate the lives of beloved family and friends.

At 2 o’clock, everyone gathered in the Stone Chapel for the memorial service conducted by Reverend Audrey Whitney and Helma Oonk. Lorain Sine sang and played her guitar at the ceremony.

Following the service, Helma Oonk guided a small group of eager walkers through along the roads and footpaths of the historic Victorian cemetery.

Visitors brought flowers to decorate graves and some chose to purchase flowers available on site. Glenwood offers a wonderful live flower program where geraniums will be watered and maintained by staff throughout the season.

Refreshments were enjoyed by all in the chapel.
