During the early 1900s, it was customary for families to come to Glenwood for a special day of remembrance. Flowers and wreaths were placed on the graves of loved ones, prayers were said, and many visitors took a quiet stroll around the park-like grounds.

Last year this tradition was rekindled at Glenwood. This year Decoration Day was held on Sunday afternoon, June 2nd. Visitors were greeted at the cemetery by the music of guitarist Ken Hudson and later everyone gathered at the stone chapel for a memorial service conducted by Reverend Audrey Whitney. Soloist Lorain Sine sang during the special service.

The Glenwood board of directors and manager Helma Oonk were pleased with the increased attendance this year, as people trickled in and out all afternoon paying their respects to family members and friends. Gayle Osborne and Kerry Reynolds, of Flowers ‘N Such helped families honour loved ones by having flowers available. Visitors were invited for refreshments in the chapel.

Kudos to Glenwood for reviving Decoration Day which is a great idea but except for the area at the front of the cemetery which was neatly mowed there was tall grass everywhere when I left some flowers for my family on Saturday. Not very respectful. Everybody knows it’s a struggle to maintain a big cemetery like this but what happens with the grant that comes from council every year? Don’t they use some of this money to pay for grass cutting? Glenwood has improved its appearance a lot in the past few years but it was sad to see that tall grass overgrowing the graves last weekend.
