Discover services for PEC seniors

We have so many things to celebrate that it’s impossible to choose what to talk about first.

The agency helps seniors live at home and has carried out this work in Prince Edward for 33 years.  Now the reach has extended to all parts of Southeastern Ontario with the Home At Last (HAL) program, managed regionally by the agency.  HAL helps seniors make the transition from hospital to home, providing both transport and settling-in services for older people discharged from any hospital in South East Ontario. Fully funded by the South East Local Health Integration Network, this is one of three “transition from hospital to home” regional initiatives that Prince Edward Community Care is involved in.

And it’s also Community Support Services Month in Ontario. Community Support Services help people live at home. A range of services – including Meals on Wheels® – help people maintain, or regain their independence so that they can continue their full lives as citizens, volunteers, consumers, taxpayers and voters.  The frozen Meals on Wheels program is growing as more and more seniors find benefit in these tasty, nutritious and low sodium meals.  Clients of the frozen meal program say “the assistance from Community Care has allowed me to stay at home independently” and “I like the communication and delivery, thank you very much. I am 83 years old and I appreciate your help.”

The agency continues the celebration, announcing the establishment of The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Foundation.  Maureen Finnegan, says “I am proud to be the founding President of the Community Care Foundation — the fundraising arm of the Association — so that required funds are available to help seniors live at home.”  The Foundation will ensure that all funds raised and donated will stay in The County to support seniors.

And finally, October 1 of every year is declared by the United Nations as the International Day of Older Persons. Chair of Community Care’s board says “Community Care supports the efforts of the federal government to designate a day to celebrate seniors – October 1st each year.”  This is the day designated to be Canada’s National Seniors Day in Bill C-40, An Act to establish National Seniors Day, which was recently passed by the House of Commons.

Join in the celebration on Friday, October 1st from 2-3pm at Prince Edward Community Care’s office in The Armoury, 206 Main Street in Picton.  There will be cake, coffee, and displays.  Learn about the services available and how you can become involved.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association services include Meals on Wheels®, escorted transportation to medical and other appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care clinics, help with forms, rural route reassurance/telephone reassurance programs, home maintenance and respite programs.  The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts.
