Do everything you can to support Picton hospital

At the Quinte Health Care Annual General Meeting (June 22) Foundation Past President Randi Claxton gave a detailed report of the P.E.C.M.H. Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1985 as a charitable orginization dedicated to providing long term financial assistance to fund capital medical equipment, buildings and /or renovations at P.E.C.M.H. The Ministry of Health does not fund the purchase of equipment for hospitals.

In his report Mr. Claxton gave some details that some County residents may not be aware of. Since 1999 the Foundation has raised $2.7 million toward medical equipment and building improvements at P.E.C.M.H.

The Dialysis Clinic (operated by K.G.H.) has 10 stations where patients can sit in very comfortable chairs watching their own TVs while receiving Dialysis. This was funded by the Foundation at $500,000 because of the generosity of this community.

One million dollars was raised by the Foundation to help fund the recently redeveloped Dr B. Earle Taylor Emergency Dept. This Emergency Dept. now has double the space that it had one year ago.

Mr. Claxton was very clear when he stated that the P.EC.M.H. Foundation will remain independent (from Belleville and Trenton Foundations). For equipment used by County residents at Q.H.C. Belleville or Trenton (not available at P.E.C.M.H.) our Foundation pays a pro rated share. The Capital budget for equipment for Quinte Health Care this year is $3.8 million.

In the future P.E.C.M.H. Foundation along with Belleville and Trenton will host fundraising events such as a Radiothon on Oct. 7. Our Foundation has hired a consultant and will embark on a campaign to raise more funds and publicize fundraisers within and by the community. The P.E.C.M.H. Foundation office may be reached at 613-476-1008 ext.4503.

With the arrival of new C.E.O. Mary Clare Egberts it appears a new degree of confidence has been re-established with Q.H.C. Hopefully in the future many of you will be able to make a donation so that all four hospitals under the Quinte Health Care umbrella will have the best possible medical equipment available to you the stakeholders.

To paraphrase Dr Ray Dawes (Chair of the rural health physicians) speaking about P.E.C.M.H. “Ladies and Gentleman, you have a very fine Hospital – do everything you can do to support it.”.
