A dressy look from the past highlighted the 110th annual meeting of the Prince Edward District Women’s Institute this month.
Guests Cindy Donafield and Laurel Slone modelled dresses and under garments from the late 1800s that they have made, tying in anniversary celebrations by imagining how some past WI members may have dressed.
WI District President Evelyn Peck welcomed members from the Prince Edward District, Hastings, Northumberland and Peterborough, visitors, board members and delegates.
Representatives from each branch gave year-end reports and noted thousands of volunteer hours contributed in the communities.
Ashley Mitchell, a Gd 12 student at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute was this year’s recipient of the WI’s $1,000 scholarship winner.
Her winning essay topic was ‘Advocacy has always been a big part of Women’s Institute’.
Thanking the members for the scholarship, Mitchell explained she plans to attend Loyalist College and Brock University this fall to pursue the Registered Nursing Bachelor of Science Program. Upon graduation, the plans to gain three years work experience as an RN before pursuing additional post secondary education to become a Nurse Practitioner.
Prince Edward County WI members are now gearing up for their biggest fundraiser of the year, the annual Arts & Crafts sale to be held Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Picton Fairgrounds.
