At approximately 12:45 a.m. this morning, Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue responded to a fire on Cumberland Street in Picton.
A family residing at the property was alerted to the fire, safely evacuated the home, and called 911.
Firefighters from Station 1 (Picton) and Station 2 (Bloomfield) were dispatched and arrived on scene to find fire at the rear of a two-storey residence. Crews quickly launched a coordinated attack, containing the fire and preventing significant spread to neighbouring properties.
“The great work from our fire crews limited the damage to the neighbouring properties and knocked the fire down to keep most of the damage to the exterior and attic space,” stated Fire Chief Chad Brown.
There were no injuries reported. Damage is estimated at approximately $750,000. Firefighters are expected to remain on scene through the morning to monitor for hotspots and assist with the investigation.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
