Emma Lui on water-taking and environment

Emma Lui

Those with concerns about the environment and water-taking are invited to hear from Emma Lui, Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The PEC Public Library and the Quinte Chapter of Council of Canadians will host Lui, a national water campaigner who contributed a chapter to a new book ‘Corporatizing Canada’, which looks at the commercialization of public services, including water, education, health care and more.

In her chapter, called, “Murky Waters: When Governments Turn Water Management into a Business” she writes about the threat of Nestlé’s bottled water takings, the privatization of water and trade agreements, and the need to implement the human right to water and the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

“These issues show how frontline communities – like those fighting the commodification of water and promoting the Blue Communities Project – are our greatest hope for water justice,” said Lynne Rachon, one of the Quinte Chapter Council of Canadians.

“The new council is thinking of forming an Environmental Committee so this may be something that will start the conversation and get the ball rolling,” said Rochon.

This event is free of charge. Signed books are to be available Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Picton Town Hall, 2 Ross St. in Picton (the old Firehall)
