Expected rain and runoff brings water safety statement

Quinte Conservation notes the local watershed is forecast to receive 25mm or more of rain over the weekend. That, coupled with mild temperatures, will melt snow and create runoff, causing elevated river flows, swelling in streams and rivers and some isolated nuisance flooding.

“The Prince Edward County Watershed has received above average lake effect precipitation in recent weeks and is currently experiencing spring-like levels in creeks and rivers. Additional rains will further elevate these levels,” said Dave Eastcott, water resources technician with Quinte Conservation.

“With recent cold weather, ice has started to form in northern areas of the watershed, however, these ice conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly during this period and can make for unstable banks and dangerous water conditions. Ice cover on lakes, rivers and streams may break up as a result of warm temperatures, rain, and high winds. The public is advised to stay away from open and fast flowing water, culverts, dams, ice covered water, and banks.”

Residents are reminded to make sure sump pumps are in good working condition and to help reduce ponding by keeping ditches, culverts, and storm drains clear from obstructions.

A Water Safety Statement indicates high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for users such as anglers, boaters, children or pets. Flooding is not expected.

The message is in effect until (or updated before) Dec. 14.
