See what’s blooming in 10 of Prince Edward County’s finest gardens  Saturday, July 9 as the Prince Edward County Green Trust hosts a self-guided tour.
“The tour is interesting for both visitors and residents of The County,” notes Kevin Bazkur, Green Trust president. “Some of the gardens on the tour are in locations that residents have never visited, or are in areas they haven’t been in a very long time.”
The gardens included are on Big Island, Hwy 49, Picton, County Roads 17, 10 and 12, Bloomfield, Hiller and west of Picton. Full details are printed on the tickets.
The Prince Edward County Green Trust was set up in 1999 by Rico Antognini and John Murray during a downturn in the economy. The two, with backgrounds in non-profit organizations, thought it to be a wise move to do some forward thinking about the financial status of the Prince Edward County Horticultural Society and following a presentation, set up the trust.
“The provincial government gives the PEC Horticultural Society a grant, pro-rated to its membership,” Bazkur says. “This amount usually totals $1,000 per year but as costs go up, our membership fluctuates, sometimes downward.
“The Green Trust was established as a charity to raise money, invest conservatively and eventually distribute the interest on the money to support the garden clubs and societies in Prince Edward County.”
When the Canada Revenue Agency said in 2005 that the Trust must start paying out 80 per cent of bequested monies, the Trust starting presenting donations. Over the years it has supported the Horticultural Society, the Ameliasburgh Garden Club, The Master Gardeners, Picton’s Cenotaph, and Glenwood Cemetery.
The Trust’s volunteers hold a major fundraiser each year, such as a garage sale or garden tour. They also raise funds through 50/50 draws, collection jars, collecting Canadian Tire money, bulb sales and personal donations.
The officers for 2010/11 are: President Kevin Bazkur; Vice-President Marianne Malachowski, Treasurer Norma Crichton and Directors Jane Rodney and Gordon Laurie. For more information call Kevin at 613-393-2111.
