Family Day fun with Friends

The Friends of Sandbanks hosted a Family Day event at the park’s Maple Rest Heritage House on Monday. Family and friends enjoyed hiking along the new Sandbanks Dunes Trail, a 2.5 km trail that loops through the dunes and along the edge of several pannes (unique wetlands that fill with water during certain times of year and are dry otherwise).
Volunteers served chili and hot chocolate. Mark Despault, the new chair of Friends of Sandbanks, entertained with live music as visitors warmed up by the fire.
The Friends of Sandbanks welcomed new members and accepted donations during the festivities. The funds collected go toward projects that enhance the Sandbank’s experience and provide education for visitors.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the west end of the park. To celebrate, a book is in the works to feature the history, geology and biology of the Dunes. Once published, the book will be available in the Park store.
