Farmers’ Market proposed for Picton

The idea of an indoor farmers’ market with a focus on helping food insecurity issues in the County has been pitched to council.

Rebecca Sweetman, of Hawkridge Homestead explained her idea at Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

“We’re proposing a truly community-run market,” she said. “We would establish this as a non-profit social enterprise registered with Farmers’ Market of Ontario which sets guidelines for best practices.

Another goal, she said, is to engage youth and educates all on food security issues.

“Really what we want is to create a vibrant community hub that centres on good, local food, at affordable prices and supporting local farmers.”

Her deputation included letters of support from the Prince Edward Federation of Agriculture and the Chamber of Commerce.

With an eye to opening in 2018 with 40 vendors, Sweetman said Picton’s former town hall (former fire hall) is considered a good location but she is also open to other centrally-positioned locations. Council has yet to receive a staff report on whether the Ross Street building will be put up for sale.
