Fermentation Festival wants you to ‘Go With Your Gut!’ – Aug. 4

The second annual Ontario Fermentation Festival will be a family-friendly, day-long celebration of Ontario fermented foods and beverages; happening 10-4 at the Crystal Palace in Picton ON, Aug. 4th. The event is organized by Pyramid Ferments, a Prince Edward County based producer of fermented sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and kvass.

The Ontario Fermentation Festival’s goals are:

To help promote the fermented food and beverage community in Ontario. We aim to celebrate, inspire and educate our provincial community about the many types of food and beverage ferments available in Ontario.
We also aim to promote an awareness and interest in healthy, local, Ontario food choices.

“Last year we had an amazing turnout with over 900 people coming out to learn more about fermentation and eat all the delicious foods! We’re organizing this event to draw attention to our unique and growing industry. People are becoming increasingly interested in fermented foods and gut health. We want to celebrate the great diversity of fermented foods we offer in this province and also draw attention to the fact that there are many Ontario made options for fermented foods and drinks. I find it’s easy to be overshadowed by big U.S. brands on store shelves and we’d like to change that. We want to help people know that there are many excellent Canadian and Ontario made options.” Jenna Empey, Pyramid Ferments

With a keen and growing interest in all things fermented and functional foods; we expect to attract many festival goers interested in tasting and learning more about what ferments are, ferments for health and wellness, and the types of ferments available in Ontario. The format of the festival will include an all fermented artisan marketplace, farmers market, prepared food vendors featuring fermented ingredients, and veggie themed kids activities. There will also be an amateur ferment competition and an all Ontario craft beverage garden.

“We’re really looking forward to our line up of speakers and workshops. They really let people get involved and learn first hand how to make their own fermented foods and drinks. We’ve got demonstrations on how to cook with ferments and incorporate them into your diet, the health benefits of fermented foods, how to make kimchi and kombucha as well as fermented food trends in the restaurant industry.” Alex Currie, Pyramid Ferments

“There are many types of ferments and we want to have all of them represented at the 2018 Ontario Fermentation Festival. There’s a lot of fermented foods that people wouldn’t expect; chocolate and coffee are some of the more obscure ones. Some examples of fermented foods and beverages expected to be represented at the Ontario Fermentation Festival are sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, cheese, kefir, tempeh, kvass, pickles, vinegar, spirits, beer, malt, wine, cider, mead, sourdough bread, nut cheeses, and cured meats. It’s all the most delicious things, for sure.” Jenna Empey, Pyramid Ferments
