Festival Players offers support to playwrights

Writers across Prince Edward County and across the province are invited to apply for support from Festival Players for writing and play creation.

This is the sixth year the company has participated in the Ontario Arts Council’s Theatre Creators’ Reserve program, an arms-length program designed to provide financial support to playwrights and theatre creators.

“We’ve been able to give modest grants to more than 20 writers over the past few years, some local, some regional, and some from as far afield as Sudbury,” said Sarah Phillips, Artistic Director. “There have been comedies, musicals, shows for children, dramatic scripts, and storytelling shows. It’s been a bit of everything.”

Phillips notes not everyone appreciates that the shows they enjoy so much on stage once had to start somewhere – through paper and pencil or on a laptop – and the creation process can take years.

“To be able to support writers as they focus on their craft means that we can play a small part in the development of those shows and those artists. It’s a win-win,” said Phillips.

Playwrights and creators can visit the company’s website for more information about the program, deadlines, eligibility requirements, etc at www.festivalplayers.ca. Deadline for submission is Friday, Dec. 9, 2016. Numerous professional theatres in Ontario are part of this program and deadlines across province vary.
