Firefighters knock down house fire, limiting damage

Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue responded to a fire at a house on Barker Street in Picton at about 6 a.m. this morning after a passing pedestrian observed the flames and called 911.

Fire Chief Chad Brown said crews quickly extinguished the fire and limited further property damage.

The house was vacant at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

“We are encouraged when smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) alarms are sounding when firefighters arrived on scene,” said Brown.

“Our firefighters did an awesome job containing the fire to a small portion of the home. The fire caused about $100,000 in property damage but our crews prevented about $550,000 from further loss.”

The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental.
