Five fatalities in two months have police concerned about driving practices

In addition to motor vehicle collisions that result in personal injury and  property damage, Prince Edward OPP detachment commander Barry Freeburn says five fatal motor vehicle collisions in the past two months have exponentially raised concerns about driving practices within Prince Edward County.

“This has motivated an appeal from Prince Edward OPP to all motorists to reflect upon their own driving habits and encourage them to drive not only sober but with due care and attention to their surroundings and road conditions at all times,” says Const. Kim Guthrie.

• October 20th a cyclist was struck and killed in Bloomfield
• November 12th, a vehicle driving too fast on Cty Rd 39 left the roadway and struck a tree near Consecon.  The driver later died from her injuries.
• November 22nd a vehicle on Cty Rd 14 lost control on slippery roads, left the roadway, entered a ditch and caught fire.  The driver was killed.
• December 24th a vehicle on Loyalist Parkway lost control, entered oncoming lanes and was struck by another vehicle.  The driver that lost control was killed.
• December 28th a southbound vehicle on Hwy 62 was being driven in the oncoming lanes for reasons yet to be determined.  The vehicle collided with two oncoming vehicles and the driver of the southbound car was killed.

Staff Sgt Freeburn advises officers will be diligent with enforcement and will continue to focus on what are known as the “big four” factors considered to be the primary sources contributing to serious injuries and deaths in motor vehicle collisions.  They are: impaired driving; aggressive driving; improper or lack of seatbelt use and distracted driving.
