Flu clinics start this month

The Hastings and Prince Edward Counties health unit begins its annual free flu vaccine campaign clinics this month throughout the area – with Picton’s set for  Oct. 24 and Nov. 7 at the Salvation Army Citadel Hall.
The vaccine is free of charge and available to people six months of age and older who live, work or attend school in Ontario.
Flu immunizations will also be available through other health care providers, and some workplaces.
“The flu is a serious illness that can lead to pneumonia,” says Dr. Richard Schabas, medical officer of health. “The flu shot is the most effective way for people to protect themselves and their families.”
No appointments are required to receive the shot at health unit
clinics.
Health Unit Facts about the Flu and Flu Vaccine
* Each year the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three flu virus strains most likely to be circulating in the upcoming flu season.

* This year the three strains contained in the vaccine are:
A/California/7/2009, A/Perth/16/2009 and B/Brisbane/60/2008.

* It is not possible to get the flu from the flu shot because the
particles of the virus are inactive.

* Studies have found that the flu shot can prevent up to 90 per cent of influenza in healthy adults and children.

* The flu shot is especially important for: people with weakened
immune systems; pregnant women; young children; the elderly and anyone who takes care of people in these groups.
