Food Bank thankful recipient of TASTE Farm Market sales

The Picton United Church County Food Bank goes into Thanksgiving weekend as the thankful recipient of $1,133.95 raised at this year’s sold-out TASTE! – a celebration of regional cuisine. The sales were generated at the TASTE! Farmers’ Market, and booth sales from the From The Farm Cooking School. All produce was donated by local farms: A&M Berwick Apiaries, The Accidental Farmer, Blake and Sandy Vader, Cherryvale Organic Farm, Cromato’s Greenhouses, Creasy’s Apple Dabble Farm, Everdean Farms & Greenhouses, Fosterholm Farms, Hagermany Farms, Laundry Farms, Ostrander Apple Farm, Royal Garlic, Stonehouse Farm, Tyme Again Gardens & Vicki’s Veggies. All left-over produces was donated to the Food Bank for local distribution. Farm Credit Canada sponsored the booth and donated reusable grocery bags. Slow Food Prince Edward County co-ordinated and managed the farm stand. Taste the County honoured its People’s Choice award winners and presented the food bank cheque among the season’s harvest at Hagerman Farms Friday morning.
A sold-out crowd of 2,000 people sampled and sipped their way around the grounds of the historic Crystal Place in Picton Saturday, Sept. 25 at what is being hailed as the best TASTE! event to date. Favourites were chosen in a variety of categories by attendees. The People’s Choice Overall Favourite was the Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co. featuring a variety of award-winning artisanal goat and sheep milk cheeses. Second place was a tie between Le Chien Noir Bistro for its pan-seared Bay of Quinte perch filets, potatoe gaufrettes, pickled fennel salad and tarragon vinaigrette; and Jamie Kennedy Kitchens for its Braised Oxtail Poutine with Five-year-old Black River Cheddar.

First – Jamie Kennedy Kitchens, Braised Oxtail Poutine with five-year-old Black River Cheddar.
Second – Tied: Amelia’s at The Waring House Restaurant – Vader’s Mini-Lamb Burger, wrapped in double-smoked bacon, with Fifth Townb’s Bonnie & Floyd sheep cheese and Pat York’s red pepper jelly.
-Le Chien Noir – Pan seared Bay of Quinte perch filets, potato gaufrettes, pickled fennel salad and tarragon vinaigrette.
Favourite Sweet Dish:
First – Dinkel’s Restaurant/Paulo’s Italian Trattoria – Apple Fritters with creme anglais using Cambell’s Orchards Apples and County Cider company cider.
Second – Copper Kettle Chocolate Co. – Chocolate Shots.
Favourite White Wine:
First – Closson Chase Vineyards – 2008 South Clos Chardonnay VQA PEC
Second – Casa-Dea Estate Winery – 2009 Pinot Gris VQA
Favourite Red Wine:
First – Sandbanks Estate Winery – 2008 Baco Noir VQA
Second – Waupoos Estates Winery – 2009 Baco Noir VQA
Favourite Beer/Cider:
First – County Cider Company and Estate Winery – Waupoos Premium Cider
Second – Barley Days Brewery – County India Pale Ale
Best Dressed Booth:
First – Angelines Restaurant and Inn
Second – Casa Dea Estate Winery.
Rhea Reed, of Oshawa, won the round-trip ticket for two to anywhere within the Windsor/Quebec corridor, sponsored by VIA Rail Canada.
Developed and launched by the Municipal Economic Development department in co-operation with Taste the County and the culinary community, TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine was created to strengthen the link between agriculture and tourism and showcase Prince Edward County as a regional culinary destination.
