Picton’s Main Street filled up with a sea of red, white and Canadian flags to celebrate Canada Day. And the intense heat didn’t deter people from perusing offers from vendors, listening to live music and grabbing a juicy burger or a cold beer.
County entertainer Megan Hutton started the day off singing the national anthem, which was followed by a short and sweet speech by County mayor Robert Quaiff.
“Thank you to all of the vendors and volunteers. This is probably one of the nicest spots to be today,” he said. “I can’t imagine there’s any more room at the Sandbanks Park right now, so this is the next best choice. Happy Canada Day to everyone.”
Live music continued all afternoon, with Instant Rivalry, The Frere Brothers, Gavin Massey and the new Cue The Funk band, along with local talent prsented by the Recreation Outreach Centre.
The annual puppy parade was cancelled due to the heat, but demonstrations and activities continued along the street – including target practice, a lego building centre, caricatures by artist Tim Snyder, face painting from the HUB Child and Family Centre and street performers.
Sarah Doiron, of Picton’s Business Improvement Area, was busy running around to check in on all the employers to see what was running smoothly or maybe running too fast.
“This really is a community event and all I can say is the entire community came together for this. Look around, it turned out great,” she said.
