Four candidates set to face off for provincial election

Trenton councillor David O’Neil is the fourth candidate to seek winning the seat for MPP for the Bay of Quinte region.

The two-term Quinte West councillor is the son of the late Hugh O’Neil, who served as the Liberal Party MPP for Quinte, from 1975 to 1995.

He faces Progressive Conservative Tyler Allsopp, who currently holds the position, having won the byelection in September after MPP Todd Smith resigned in August.

Also running are Amanda Robertson for the New Democratic Party, and Lori Borthwick, for the Greens. Candidate nominations close at 2 p.m. Feb. 13.

The main provincial party leaders are Doug Ford, PC; Bonnie Crombie, Liberal; Marit Stiles, NDP and Mike Schreiner, Green Party.

Jan. 29 is the first official day of campaigning following the snap election call by PC leader Doug Ford – more than a year ahead of schedule – citing the need for a clear mandate to fight against tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump. Opposition parties have stated the election is unnecessary as they would have supported the premier.

Election day is Thursday, Feb. 27.

Seven candidates were vying for the MPP seat in September’s byelection.

Allsopp won just over 38.69 per cent of the vote with a margin of about 2,000 votes over Sean Kelly, Liberal Party candidate, who gained 33.32 per cent of the vote.

Seven candidates were vying for the MPP seat:
Tyler Allsopp PC Party – 14,430 votes (38.69%)
Sean Kelly, Liberal Party – 12,428 votes (33.32%)
Amanda Robertson, New Democratic Party – 8,607 votes (23.08%)
Lori Borthwick, Green Party – 1,186 votes (3.18%)
Margaret Schuler, New Blue Party- 369 votes (0.99%)
John Turmel, Independent – 149 votes (0.40%)
Mark Snow, Libertarian and party leader – 129 votes (0.35%)

Voter turnout was 38.5 per cent, or 37,298 of 97,016 registered electors at 87 polls throughout Prince Edward County, Quinte West and Belleville area (only south of Hwy. 401).
