Music fans and movie lovers were part of a full house crowd at the Regent Theatre Sunday for a PEC Syria fundraiser supporting the resettlement of Syrian families in the area.

‘Song for Syria’ featured a live concert and documentary film screening, both thematically centred on giving women a voice. The afternoon opened with a concert by the Shout Sister Choir, led by Georgette Fry, followed by the award-winning documentary, Queens of Syria.

Members of three Syrian families were guests of honour for the afternoon and expressed their thanks for support in their language and English. Nasser and Nabiha and their five children have moved into a rental house in Belleville. Adnan and Suhaila have settled into Wellington with their four children and the County’s first family welcomed last fall, includes Abdel and Sawsen with thier 10 children and grandmother.

During intermission between the choir and the movie, the families mingled with community members in a packed theatre lobby.

The movie Queens of Syria tells the story of 50 displaced Syrian women living in Jordan – currently home to nearly one million Syrian refugees. The women come together to create and perform their own version of The Trojan Women, an ancient Greek tragedy about the plight of women in war, written by Euripides in 450 B.C. None of these women have acted before, but they connect emotionally with a story that gives voice to their own experiences of exile and loss. Writer-director Yasmin Fedda won the prestigious Black Pearl for Best Director from the Arab World at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. The sold-out film headlined the Syria International Film Festival in Toronto last fall.
