Full house enjoys Hits of the Blitz

Tenor Julian Gallo and soprano Lenni Stewart headlined the Hits of the Blitz encore performance at St. Andrew's Church in Picton Thursday night.

Songs that brought people together for a few musical moments during the dark days of the first and second world wars were sung to a full house at St. Andrew’s Church Thursday night.

Tenor Julian Gallo and soprano Lenni Stewart sang the Hits of the Blitz as they took their audience on a walk down memory lane with their collection of nostalgic and best-loved music. Tom Dietzel, who is the vocal coach for the musical theatre program at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, was at the piano. Gallo and Stewart sang the songs of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Canadian composter Ruth Lowe, who wrote “I’ll Never Smile Again”, a song that made Frank Sinatra a star.

Gallo began his career with the Canadian Opera Company and has worked with some of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, including Shirley Jones, and Van Johnson. He was discovered by icon Mickey Rooney and together they performed for many years.

Stewart has entertained audiences throughout Ontario and in the Quinte area for the past 18 years in varied concert and theatre productions. She has collaborated with Gallo in numerous benefit concerts. The two met in 2009 during a concert production of Phantom of the Opera/Les Miserables where he starred as Phantom and Jean Valjean and she played Fantine.

Members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Prince Edward Squadron welcomed guests, handed out programs and marched the colours into the church, led by piper Dave McIntosh. An audio/visual presentation featured wartime photographs.
