Funds help landowners keep Bay of Quinte clean

This shoreline was approved for a waterway planting/shoreline naturalization project to stop soil erosion along the banks.

The Bay of Quinte Remedial Action Plan (BQRAP) has helped 21 landowners implement environmental restoration projects.

The projects, valued at $40,000 included: six livestock fencings, three alternate watering systems, two shoreline naturalizations and 10 waterway plantings. The projects were designed to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the Bay of Quinte.

“Both livestock fencing and alternate watering systems will benefit water quality by reducing stream bank erosion, thereby lowering sediment inputs, and stopping bacterial and phosphorus contamination,” said Sarah Midlane-Jones, of BQRAP. “Waterway plantings and shoreline naturalizations that add or improve the amount of vegetation along a shoreline or wetland will provide habitat for fish and wildlife, and act as a filters for sediment and nutrient runoff (phosphorus) from the adjacent land.”

The amount of phosphorus entering the Bay of Quinte, from both urban and rural sources, she said, has always been a problem as it promotes excess algae growth and impairs water quality.

“Private landowners play a vital role in the preservation and restoration of shorelines and wetlands and directly influence water quality in the Bay,” she said. “As the BQRAP gets closer to its goal of removing the Bay from the Areas of Concern list, maintaining reduced phosphorus levels will be critical for the long-term health of the Bay.”

Funding of projects is to continue in the spring of 2016.
