History will be made as ballots are cast

The marathon 78-day campaign has come to a close and the three major federal party local candidates appear to be in a snug race for votes at the polls Monday in Canada’s 42nd general election.

Approximately 3.6 million electors voted at the four days of advance polls over Thanksgiving weekend – an increase of 71 per cent over advance polls in 2011. In the new Bay of Quinte riding, 13,073 votes were cast. There are 83,954 registered electors listed for Bay of Quinte’s population of 109,488 (plus those who register to vote on Monday).

History will be made with whatever choice Canadians make – on the local and national level. Locally, the winner will be the first representative of the Bay of Quinte riding. Nationally,
Justin Trudeau, son of Pierre, would be the first son-father prime ministers; Thomas Mulcair would be first NDP prime minister and Stephen Harper would join Sir John and Wilfrid Laurier with four consecutive wins.

Polls are open for 12 hours Monday – staggered across the country so the majority of results are available at approximately the same time – but 9:30 to 9:30 here. Canadians can now tweet and share election results from different provinces as they become available. The ban on premature transmission of results was lifted. Some results from eastern provinces will be available while voting continues in the west. There are 25,638,379 registered electors (plus those who register on election day).

To vote, electors much bring proof if identity and address.
