Hospice grief support group starts Oct. 31

“Grief is not, as I thought, a state, but a process. Like a walk in a winding valley which gives you a new landscape every few miles.” C.S. Lewis

Hospice Prince Edward offers a six-week course for those people who have suffered the death and loss of a family member or dear friend. With two facilitators, this small group will give members an opportunity to share their concerns and problems around the experience and pain of grief.

The next session will be starting October 31 from 2 to 4 pm for 6 weeks at Hospice Prince Edward, 40 Downes Avenue, Picton. (Note: This date has been moved forward) There is no charge for the support group as they are a component of the bereavement program.

Bereavement support is offered by trained volunteers who organize small peer-group meetings where people can share their grief journey in a safe, confidential environment. Hospice can coordinate care with partnering health care team members when necessary and also offers conversation and support to those who may be interested in setting up or developing a bereavement support service.

“The feelings associated with grief, which are so disruptive to a person’s life, are normal, and will be lessened by sharing with others going through the same journey,” says Jane Moon, co-ordinator. “An understanding group, meeting together, helps each other to deal with their concerns and to move forward with their lives.”

The group will look at and talk about their emotional ups and downs and how to deal with daily routines and issues in a mutually supportive, non-judgmental, non-denominational and confidential setting.

“Life-limiting illness affects not just the person who is ill, but also family and friends. Hospice care includes support during the patient’s illness, when death occurs, and in the weeks and months that follow. We offer this service to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one.”
