Hospice Prince Edward Foundation President Linda Middleton, right, welcomes Community Care Access Centre Board Chair David Vigar and new interim administrator Angela Jodoin, to the new Serenity Garden at Hospice.

The Hospice Prince Edward board of directors and the South East community Care Access Centre (CCAC) welcomed interim administrator Angela Jodoin to the residential site in Picton with a tour of the new Serenity Garden.

The appointment follows the resignation last month of Nancy Parks, who was executive director of the organization for the past six years.

“Angela’s leadership skills and breadth of experience will serve the organization and the community well as we look forward to providing residential hospice palliative care in the community,” said Linda Middleton, Foundation President and Chair of Hospice Prince Edward. “We appreciate Nancy’s efforts over the last six years and Hospice Prince Edward is proud of our record in the community under her leadership. With strong support from the community, we are in a good position to work with our partners to continue welcoming patients and their families to our home.”

Hospice Prince Edward has served nine residents this year.

“Most of us would prefer to remain in our own homes and be cared for by our families at end of life,” said Middleton. “Some people choose to receive hospice services in their home while others choose to come to our home. Families want to provide this care but are not always able to do so without additional support. We work closely with all healthcare and community service partners to ensure that every client receives the highest quality of support and care.”

The South East CCAC provides clinical and personal support services to hospice patients.

“The CCAC has partnered with Hospice Prince Edward to help more than 70 patients nearing end of life to continue living as comfortably as possible, while maintaining their dignity,” said David Vigar, Chair of the South East CCAC Board of Directors. “We look forward to continue working with Hospice Prince Edward to help more patients receive the right care in the right place, so they can live with comfort and dignity until their death in their place of choice.”

Vigar said volunteers will also soon have access to palliative care education from a Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultant at the CCAC.

“Volunteers provide support in the community, working directly with clients at home, in hospitals, and in long-term care homes,” he said. “Life-limiting illness affects not just the person who is ill, but also family and friends. Hospice care includes support, both during the patient’s illness and also when death occurs.”

HOSPICE PRINCE EDWARDBereavement support is offered by trained volunteers who organize small peer group meetings where people can share their grief journeys in a safe, confidential environment.

“Volunteers are the heart of the organization and it is important that we support them with appropriate training to ensure we are providing compassionate and supportive care,” said Middleton. “We are fortunate in this community to have access to CCAC staff to help us provide a high quality of care to our residents and their families as well as vital training for our volunteers.”
