Hunters rescued in two incidents

Calls for help from hunters heard this weekend and rescue efforts were successful.

On Saturday, Oct. 7 at approximately 7pm a 911 call from a resident on Loyalist Parkway near West Lake advised they could hear calls for help from somewhere on West Lake.

Wellington Firefighters and officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward detachment responded to the area.

“Emergency crews located some hunters who had become stranded when the motor on their boat had broken down,” said PEC OPP Cst. Kim Guthrie. “The hunters were making their way to shore using a small trolling motor. No one was injured in this incident.”

Sunday, at about 11:25 am Prince Edward OPP were alerted to a hunter stranded on a small island in the Bay of Quinte near Massassauga Point.

“Officers enlisted the assistance of the Ameliasburgh Fire Department who deployed their water rescue team to the island and rescued the hunter,” said Guthrie. “The 39-year-old male from Trenton advised he had been hunting on the island with a second male who he had not seen in several hours. The 19′ aluminum boat they had used to get to the island was also missing.”

Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (JRCC) from Trenton was deployed to the area and began a search.

“The second male was located clinging to his overturned and sinking boat near Point Ann. A 51-year-old Belleville male was transported to Belleville hospital where he was treated for exposure. The circumstances surrounding the vessel capsizing are not clear at this time.”
