International Women’s Day 2014 – status quo, celebration and work for change

On the eve of International Women’s Day, the status quo remains in place for nearly 800 missing and murdered aboriginal women, their families and friends.

Protesters, led by activist Shawn Brant, had been holding peaceful demonstrations on the Shannonville Road this past week raising awareness and hoping to hear there would be a public inquiry.

Friday, the long awaited 96-page report from the Special Committee on Violence Against Indigenous Women tabled on Friday makes 16 recommendations but does not call on the federal government to launch a public inquiry.

Saturday, protesters occupied the CN Rail tracks that cross Wyman Road, just south of Old Hwy 2. A stop train order was put in place by CN. OPP and CN Police saw an adult male strike a window of an unmarked police vehicle, breaking the glass. Officers arrested four people.  One was been released unconditionally. Charges are pending.

The ‘Invisible Women: A Call to Action’ A Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women In Canada report fell short of demands by aboriginal groups and opposition parties calling for an inquiry.

Recommendations include public awareness and prevention campaigns; a DNA based missing persons index. Click here for full report

Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2014 is: Strong Women. Strong Canada.
Canadian Women – Creating Jobs One Business at a time. The theme was set to highlight the role women entrepreneurs play in driving growth, creating  jobs, and fostering innovation in the Canadian economy.  According to Industry Canada, 47 per cent of all small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Canada were entirely or partly owned by women in 2010

In Prince Edward County, a celebration was held Tuesday at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute (see photographs) and starting on March 18th a group of local women will begin encouraging women to run for county council. Meetings are to be held every two weeks to April 29th at the Picton Library.

“A group of us will gather to offer information, discuss concerns, explore solutions and build supportive networks for women wishing to seek a seat at our Council horseshoe.  We hope that any woman with an interest in local municipal politics will come out and learn what the job is about and how to get there – whether you are in a position to run yourself [Be HER] or have an interest in helping another woman that is [Support HER], or simply interested in better local government.  There will be no “issue” discussion, this is about process.”

Municipal election day is Oct. 27th 2014.
Mark your calendar to be at the Picton Public Library, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. lower level. No charge.
March 18 Why focus on women?
April 1 Role & responsibilities of a councillor
April 15 Getting elected
April 29 Being a councillor

The meetings are presented by councillors Bev Campbell and Heather Campbell, former County Clerk Victoria Leskie and Picton BIA Manager Lyndsay Richmond. They are not an offering of The County of Prince Edward.

  1. Paul says:

I watched in disgust as Minister of Justice Peter MacKay took the report The ‘Invisible Women: A Call to Action’ A Report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women In Canada and threw it on the floor of the House Of Commons. The Speaker Andrew Scheer rises to advise Mr MacKay on the use of Pages all with a giant Grin. Utterly disgusting. And yes Mr Brant doesn’t do things in a normal way and brings bad publicity but any publicity is god publicity and it does encourage dialogue on an issue that has plagued Aboriginal Communities with that I say Keep it up Shawn…….

  2. Jim says:

Really, any demonstration by Shawn is more about Shawn than anything else.

And I wouldn’t be surprised that those closer to the scene are bemused by the sudden interest by Shawn and his supporters in women’s issues. Worthy cause, but most likely subverted in this instance.

  3. Jan says:

I wouldn’t really call it peaceful demonstrations by Shawn Brant when a police cruiser’s window is smashed and a Belleville Intelligencer reporter is threatened!!
