It’s looking like a white Christmas – but extreme cold on the way too

A white Christmas is looking like it’s going to be followed by a cold end to 2018.

Today’s first full day of winter is expected to receive five to 10 cms of snow with a mix of freezing rain and ice pellets to follow early Saturday morning.

A special weather statement is in effect and snow could be mixed with freezing rain and ice pellets early Saturday morning.

Students who travel by bus received an early start to the holiday as Tri-Board Student Transportation cancelled services Friday, though schools remain open.

The forecast for Christmas Day, the rest of the month and into January is for much colder temperatures.

The forecast indicates travellers can expect Christmas Eve will be cloudy with sunny breaks and Christmas Day will see a few flurries – but cold at -3 C feeling more like -10.

The Boxing Day forecast is -6 feeling like -12 and while the sun comes back Dec. 27, the coldest days begin at -13 feeling like -18.

Thursday, Dec. 28 is forecast to feel like -19 and Dec. 29 at -14, will feel like -24.
