July book launches for Sowing Poison and Mutant Beavers of Delhi

Mystery novelist Janet Kellough will launch her new book ‘Sowing Poison’ at Books & Co. on Thursday, July 5th at 7:30 p.m
The book is the second in her Thaddeus Lewis series with Dundurn Press. The first, On the Head of a Pin followed Methodist circuit rider Lewis as he tracked a serial killer across 1840s Upper Canada, a colony convulsed by the recent Mackenzie Rebellion.
In Sowing Poison, Lewis has relocated to the Village of Wellington where a mysterious disappearance in the woods sets in motion a tale that includes murder, mayhem and mysticism against a background of growing religious tension and the colony’s struggle for responsible government.
“Sowing Poison was fun to write because I got to do so much research into what Wellington was probably like in 1844,” Kellough says, “but the historical detail is hung on what I think is just a rattling good story.”
Kellough also intends to continue the series with a third book that sets murder against the backdrop of the massive and tragic Irish emigration of 1847.
Sowing Poison’s launch at Books and Co. starts at 7:30 p.m. on the 5th, with Kellough on hand to sign copies of the book, and to read “some of the tantalizing bits”.

Andrew McLuhan will launch his “longish short story” The Mutant Beavers of Delhi at Books & Co. Saturday, July 7th at 7 p.m.

In the book, a highly fictionalized Picton is a scenic rural town with the usual characters and the usual complaints. Running through Delhi Park, the major park in town and the site of the old town dump, is a creek which passes through a cemetery, and receives run-off from a waste treatment plant. The creek supplies a small pond in which a colony of beavers make their home. What evil lurks in the hearts of mutant Beavers? How will the townspeople cope with a horde of mutant Beaver? Who will save the day?
“The story features many once-familiar people and places warped by a convalescent mind,” says McLuhan. “Certainly the first, and likely the last book of its kind to come out of Prince Edward County.”

McLuhan will be on hand at the launch to sign books and read from his book. He notes this is a limited edition of 100 copies.

“This story contains material that will likely offend some, and downright tick some people off. I’m publishing it anyway,” says McLuhan. “My bookseller advises that in the unlikely event that advance sales meet the limit of 50 copies, I must increase the edition to 150.”
