Justin Trudeau was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in a landslide 80 per cent of the votes on the first ballot Sunday night.
He shared a message of hope and unity and accepted the job “with great humility, the confidence you have placed in me”.
“We are fed up with leaders who pit Canadians against Canadians. West against East, rich against poor, Quebec against the rest of the country, urban against rural,” he said to cheers from 1,000 supporters at an Ottawa hotel.
“In a remarkable experiment with democracy, over 104,000 members and supporters voted for the leader of their choice,” said Lenore Begley, president of the Prince Edward Hastings Federal Liberals. “Justin captured 80 per cent of those votes today and he immediately started down the path to 2015 with his assertion that the party is united and strong.
“He challenged us to act on our passion and dedication to our country and to the Liberal policies that gave us the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, the Charter, eight balanced budgets in a row and a $13 billion surplus in 2006.
“This is the Liberal legacy based on values Canadians hold as important. These are the values that Justin will carry forward to develop policies for and with Canadians in the future.”
The next election is to be in 2015.
Joyce Murray placed second with 10 per cent of the vote.
Justin Trudeau, MP @JustinTrudeau tweeted: “We did it. Just about to go on stage, but wanted to thank my volunteers for all that you’ve done. This is your victory. Thank you.”
