Kids of Steel triathlon rolls out Sunday, June 6

The Fourth Annual County Kids of Steel Triathlon  will roll out of the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre (PEFAC) Sunday, June 6, 2010.
The event will see at least 250 children (ages 6-17), their families, and nearly 200 volunteers promoting sports, healthy living and fun for the kids in the Quinte and surrounding areas.
This race is sanctioned by the Ontario Association of Triathletes.  The race consists of swimming, biking, and running segments.  The three events begin and end on the grounds of the PEFAC.
The PEFAC is a non-profit organization looking to promote physical activity, personal achievement and self-esteem in the County.  By hosting the KOS, PEFAC hopes to extend this philosophy to all the children participating in this event.
“The Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre has been extremely generous in hosting our event this year,” says Michelle Pothier, one of the race directors. “We would like to thank them for all their support.  PEFAC is located at 13263B Loyalist Parkway (also known as HWY 33).
Before Sunday, she notes, competitors must take their bikes in for inspection.
“The people at Bloomfield Bicycle Company (Bloomfield), Ideal Bike (Picton), Doug’s Bicycle (Belleville), Stephen License (Belleville), and Trips and Trails (Bancroft) are very generously offering this service to us.  Please be patient with them as they have many bikes to check, as well as their regular customers.  The inspection is free, but if there are any alterations or repairs necessary to make your bike safe, there will be a charge for those services.  Please remember, bike inspection is mandatory.”
She notes the course has been designed with safety as a top priority.
“We encourage all of you to attend the early race kit pick up the evening before the race (Sat. 7pm-8:30pm) so that you can view the course prior to race day.  Participants must be present for race kit pick up in order to have body markings.  Again, if you are picking up your race kit on Sat. evening, the competitor must be present.  If you are coming from a distance, make sure you arrive by 7:30am on Sunday to allow for race kit pick up, your bike inspection, and to have a look about.  Do not forget to bring your numbered bib (in the race kit) on race day.
The first event will begin in the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre (PEFAC) pool, followed by the bike course and the running course.  On race day, everyone must be on site with their bikes in the Transition area before 8:30 a.m., and be fully registered, with no exception.  There will be an obligatory pre-race meeting beside the finish line at 8:35 a.m.
Participants and volunteers are welcome to ask any questions by e-mailing Michelle at mpothier@kos.net.
