Kingston hospitals seek $80,000 per year in funding from the County

Council will include a request from the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation for continued funding support to its 2020 budget deliberations.

The foundation seeks $80,000 per year for five years from the municipality ($400,000) toward the redevelopment of the Kingston General Hospital site for Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

The calculation is based on 16,961 visits by Prince Edward County residents in 2019, said Stephen McCaffrey, the foundation’s Associate Director, Major Gifts, in a deputation to council at Committee of the Whole today.

The current site includes wings developed from 1913 to 1959, sharing photographs for future plans for the emergency department, surgical suites, women and childrens’ health areas, clinical labs and the neonatal intensive care unit.

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation includes the Health Sciences Centre, Hotel Dieu, KGH and Providence Care.

Some $72 million has been used for recent improvements to the cancer centre, kidney dialysis and critical care units, acute inpatient mental health and outpatient clinics as well as Providence Care Hospital.

“The local share required to support construction costs and fully fund equipment is expected to be in excess of $100 million,” McCaffrey states. “This will yield a provincial investment between $500 million and $1 billion.”

Council, in its 2019 budget, approved a one per cent tax levy dedicated to fund its $4.5 million commitment for the redevelopment of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.
