Latchford’s interest in heritage clear

Last week I was portrayed in one of our local papers as opportunistic in my reaction to the demolition of the Methodist-Episcopal Church.  I disagree. My interest in heritage is not recent nor is it transitory. I believe that my active involvement in heritage projects over the last four years clearly demonstrates my commitment to the preservation of our heritage and culture.

I have been an active member of the Museum Advisory Committee, The Settler’s Dream Working Group which organized the reprinting of The Settler’s Dream book, and the Macaulay Church Rehabilitation Project. I am a member of the Friends of Ameliasburgh Museum, the Friends of Macaulay House Museum, and serve on the Board at Glenwood Cemetery. I am also an active supporter of the Quinte Educational Museum and Archives (Victoria Schoolhouse Museum). I have consistently supported the work of the Heritage Advisory Committee and feel that the budget and work of that committee should expand in the next term of Council.

I was genuinely outraged that the demolition of the church was started with no regard for the permit process which protects public safety, and with no regard for the feelings of the community. Instead of destroying our heritage, I believe that we should form partnerships with individuals and community groups to preserve it, for not only this generation but for those to come.

I am an active participant in the preservation of heritage, not an armchair quarterback.
