LCBO Picton demolished

liquor-store-gone-Picton’s LCBO has been levelled to begin the process of making way for a new 8,000 square foot store.

The LCBO has a temporary location on Main Street Picton – its first home in 1927 before moving to the Allison Block adjacent to the CIBC. It moved to the former McKee Motors location on Lake Street in 1957.

Some residents are not pleased with the project, its design and landscaped open spaces. Rob Brown, of Lake Street Developments, has noted work with the Heritage Advisory Committee to ensure an historic feel.
Part of the plan involved moving the house next door (Brown purchased earlier) to beside the Millennium Trail.  The curved window plan to echo curved and windowed verandahs on Main Street, required a minor variance change to the set back from the sidewalk. Neighbours attended the council meeting but were unable to discuss anything but the variance.

Because the developer faced so much criticism for a project two years in development, Mayor Robert Quaiff last month suggested a change in site plan approval processes for new development to allow for more public discussion. Commissoner of Development and Works Robert McAuley warned bringing the public in too early would be seen negatively by developers.

Another Taj Merlot– Andy Brandt’s brilliant concept to ensure that no private sector would ever bid for the LCBO assets, recognizing the bloated payroll and above-market-value leases the LCBO was locked into- precisely to ensure that no privatization would be possible.

/just wait until the road salt quickly eats through the cheap caming and cladding- it will not look “great” in five years, but rather down-at-heels and shoddy. But the (Liberal) building owner will continue to grab $29+/sq.ft/annum, forever…

Don’t complain too much, folks. I can remember when Picton was ‘dry’ and anyone who wanted a few cold ones for the weekend had to find a way into Trenton’s LCBO if they didn’t have a vehicle. A friend of mine lived in Picton and worked at the Air Base. On Fridays he would get his usual ride to work but be dropped off at the Trenton LCBO after work where he would get a 24 and hire a cab home to Picton. Pretty expensive gas that was.

The previous store was too small and dated. The parking was pathetic. The new store and parking will be a big improvement. Kudos to saving the house. Someone will make good use of it…..

I will be glad to see the angle parking and backing onto Lake Street gone -that was a feat in itself…..looking forward to seeing the new look……….

Both Wellington and Picton LCBO’s are privately owned. Leased by LCBO from the building’s owners. The Province of Ontario actually owns very few buildings.

  6. Emily says:

Are the LCBO (taxpayers) paying to move that uninspiring brick house or is the land developer? That move is not a cheap undertaking.

  7. Susan says:

Design looks great. Hope there is an entrance from the rear parking lot. We consume a lot of alcohol in Picton and deserve a new modern store. Stay thirsty my friends!
