Live streaming of council meetings begins Tuesday

The County will start live streaming and recording of council and committee meetings starting Tuesday, June 14, 2016.
All regular and special meetings of council, committee of the whole, planning public council, committee of adjustment and the community and economic development commission that are held in the Council Chambers at Shire Hall are to be live streamed. Exceptions include all advisory, ad hoc committee and police services board meetings.
These new features allow for the public to follow the meetings in real time over the internet or view the meetings at a later date. After each meeting, recordings will be posted online and made available within three full working days.
“This live streaming initiative is part of our commitment to deliver effective communication and transparency throughout our municipality and provide more opportunities for residents to keep up with County business,” said Mayor Robert Quaiff.
The live stream feed is available on the County’s website www.thecounty.ca by selecting the “New live streaming” link contained in the column on the left side of the home page. Gary – thanks for your take on this. However, it is somewhat bothersome – it implies that our Council announced this initiative of “live streaming” without properly investigating the cost before telling the public they were going to do it. Did they put this contract out for tender, or did they delay the start because they had no idea of how much it was going to cost from the beginning? So how much will this cost the taxpayers? As you can tell, I’m not impressed – at least not yet.
County government waited until they could obtain the service at a modest cost, which I’m sure everyone appreciates.
A tad weird yes, especially since other similar communities have had live streaming for near 20 years. But then again we were late getting the flush toilet as well!
Tried it! Says, not currently streaming. Only in the County.
